FLANN 100

 Flann O'Brien Centenary Weekend

Trinity College Dublin, 14-16 October 2011

Wednesday, 5th October 2011 marks the centenary of Ireland’s greatest comic writer, Brian O’Nolan/ Flann O’Brien/ Myles na gCopaleen. To pay tribute to a genius of the absurd, Trinity College Dublin will host a weekend of events to celebrate his life and works. The Flann 100 programme will bring together academics, writers, actors and directors in a series of discussions and performances of Flann and Myles' finest - and funniest - comic writing.

As Flann O’Brien, O’Nolan produced some of the most inventive novels of the twentieth century. As Myles na gCopaleen, he wrote a long-running column in The Irish Times that is still unequalled for its surreal brand of satire. And since his death in 1966, Flann and Myles have made appearances in everything from the Abbey’s hit comic musical Improbable Frequency (2005) to ABC’s drama Lost.

On Friday and Saturday, 14-15th October, Trinity College's Long Room Hub will host an academic symposium with keynote lectures by Fintan O’Toole and Keith Hopper. On Sunday, 16th October, this will be the venue for performances of material from At Swim-Two-Birds and Cruiskeen Lawn, panel discussions featuring Anthony Cronin, Frank McNally, Eamon Morrissey, Ed O’Loughlin and others, and shows exploring the life, works and even the scientific genius of Flann O’Brien.

All events are free and open to the public. This centenary celebration is supported by Trinity College, The Irish Times and Dublin UNESCO City of Literature.
